Which (Free) Cloud Storage To Choose
December 20, 2012 in Non-Tech, Storage, Tech
There are many free cloud storage options out there to choose from, but which ones are the best? Do you go by who gives you the most free storage, the one recommended by a co-worker, by a friend, or by the latest pop-up you saw? Maybe you go the more responsible route and choose based upon reliability, security, ease of use, cost and their support. Any way you decide there are a few names that keep popping up. Microsoft SkyDrive, SugarSync, Mozy, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive. There’s a good article on NetworkWorld that breaks down the different options/features of some of these.
Me personally I have a few (and even more that I have forgot about), but the one I am starting use the most is SkyDrive. To be honest the only reason for this is that it is the one with the most space. Would I use another service if it gave me more free space? Probably.
Now the downside of so many options is that your data will probably be fragmented. But what if you did the smart thing and used each service for a particular type of backup? I think that is what I am going to do. The larger files mostly media will be stored on SkyDrive since that has the most space and the rest will be divided up amongst the rest.
What do you use/suggest. Feel free to comment, I’d love to know!
How about iCloud? It’s integration with all iOS devices, iWork, iPhoto, Aperture and OS X is most convenient. CloudOn does a decent job of bringing together a few of these cloud storage services, but is lacking a few key features currently.
