Tablets at work?
May 31, 2012 in BYOD
First off, do you even own a tablet? If so, how often do you bring it to work with you. What do you use it for? Would be more inclined to bring said tablet with you to work if you could…manage your network, storage, servers, etc. I know there are some vendors that offer web based management and but what about the ones that offer specific apps for this kind of management.Do you use them? How well do they work? Does this influence you when you are deciding if you want to buy that new shiny tablet or do you not even think about using your tablet for work (BYOD is a discussion for another day )? What about the apps themselves; are they secure, have a good interface, and do they even do a decent job of helping you do your job. I love to hear your thoughts around this especially if you use any of these in your day to day job.
I use my iPad at work daily. Mostly for taking notes. My favorite app for taking handwritten notes is Notes Plus. Instead of having hard copy notebooks I have a fairly organized set of handwritten pdfs that are easy to access and browse – and they are with me all the time, no need to get back to my desk and shuffle through pages of notes in attempt to find something.
There are a ton of of other little things that make life easier. In my opinion being able to quickly access or send an email, being able to reference a document, and being able to do a quick web search make meetings more productive and the iPad is not as distracting to others as typing away at a laptop.
I also deliver a few management applications to my iPad (vSphere Client, Smart Term, Putty) with Citrix XenApp and the Citrix Receiver app. I do not use this day to day but definitely keeps me from having to be tied to my desk. Being able to access the vSphere Client on the road has been a life saver on more than one occasion.
When I first picked up my iPad last year I was not really sure how useful it would be, over time it has become a valuable tool that I use daily. Could I live with out it? Yes, I just don’t want to.
Just my thoughts.

Thanks Hersey!
Same here, I use mine mostly for note taking. I do however have plans to give the management apps a run through when I have time. But right now it’s just a convenient way to keep track of all my random thoughts 🙂
