Architecture or Marketecture

March 11, 2015 in Tech

As you know a couple of weeks ago I had the chance to participate in a #syschat via twitter and a webinar put on by SolarWinds and my good friend Kong Yang. The main topic was around Hybrid Cloud, Software Defined Data Center, Containers, and Converged Infrastructure. You can find some interesting predictions from Kong and SolarWinds HeadGeeks on these topics here. One of the questions I found interesting was “Are these architecture or marketecture?” One of my favorite quotes was from Christopher Kusek “The constructs being Architecture vs Marketecture really depends upon […]

October 3, 2014 in Tech

While trying to set up a Dell T610 I scored on craigslist, I noticed that the firmware and bios were way out of date. I currently have no OS installed so I had search through the Dell support site for ways to update with no OS. Surprisingly this was not easy to find so I decided to document my process here for others to find. I can help just one person my job here is done :). If you have been living under a rock and are not familiar with TrainSignal, they are a training company that solves the problem of subpar training. As an IT professional there is surely a course that would meet your needs. One of things I love about TrainSignal is how supportive they are of the community. They showed that support again this year and awarded each of the vExperts a year of free training! I am really excited about this and plan to take full advantage of this offer. One thing […]

Hyper-V Live Migration with the Dell PowerEdge VRTX

July 10, 2013 in Tech, Virtualization

As most of you know we recently launched one of the most exciting products of the year (I think), the Dell PowerEdge VRTX. Upon launch of VRTX there were a lot of questions that we saw online. One of the questions we heard most was “Does it truly have “Shared Storage”. To answer this Lance and I sat down in the lab and set up a Microsoft Hyper-V cluster to see how the unit would perform during a live migration. In the coming weeks you can look for more detailed […]

How social media supports IT mastery

July 9, 2013 in Social Media, Tech

A common problem for both large and small organizations is ensuring all processes related to IT run smoothly and remain up to date. While social media is oftentimes thought of as purely a channel for marketing, the truth is that your IT professionals can maximize their impact by leveraging the information found in these networks. Here are just five of the ways:  1.     Curate Volumes of Information in Record Time Gone are the days of searching painfully through hundreds of search engine results. Now you can curate exactly the information […]

Setting Up Windows Azure

May 2, 2013 in Tech, Virtualization

I have been working on setting up a mobile lab using VMware workstation for a while now (it’s an ongoing process). But I came across the Windows Azure free trial and thought “why not?” so here we go. After clicking “try it for free” and signing into your account You are presented with a 3 step process to get going.  First step is letting you know what you’ll get and what you need to proceed. Notice that your 10 web sites and mobile services stay free after the trial period. The next […]

Issues with Time Warner Motorola SBG6580

April 24, 2013 in Networking, Tech

After a few days of getting frustrated trying to find out why I could not access my home storage outside of my network, I decided to do a little research.  I knew I had setup everything correctly on my router (Cisco E4200), but for some reason the ports weren’t open. Turns out this was because of the initial TW modem setup by their tech.  Basically I just need this to be a “dumb” modem and not a modem/router. So following these steps I was able to accomplish that. Unplug coaxial […]

February 28, 2013 in Tech, Virtualization

So in my last post, we went over what hardware I would be using for my mobile lab.  In this post we’re going to go over creating a base template.  Now I know this is redundant not necessary for some people, but it’s always good to document right .
