Neither do you. You wouldn’t believe how many times I hear “Oh, you’re the social media guys” or “Oh, your team does social media”. The first thing I think people need to realize is that social media is a tool, it’s really that simple. Your job is not social media. Don’t get me wrong, social media plays a huge role in my job. My job is to deliver content that helps customers. To do this, I create content on Dell TechCenter around Dell solutions and then amplify that content through social channels. […]

Building a community around your company’s social presence is important, but the quality of that community is even more critical. Businesses need to attract the right type of followers, in order to connect in a way that benefits both parties. LinkedIn tools help marketers attract the followers most interested in your company. Once your LinkedIn Company Page is optimized with accurate company information, Products and Services, and interesting content, you can focus on developing and nurturing relationships with followers. Connecting with your target market allows for exponential growth, as engaged users will share your […]

I have been working on setting up a mobile lab using VMware workstation for a while now (it’s an ongoing process). But I came across the Windows Azure free trial and thought “why not?” so here we go. After clicking “try it for free” and signing into your account You are presented with a 3 step process to get going. First step is letting you know what you’ll get and what you need to proceed. Notice that your 10 web sites and mobile services stay free after the trial period. The next […]

After a few days of getting frustrated trying to find out why I could not access my home storage outside of my network, I decided to do a little research. I knew I had setup everything correctly on my router (Cisco E4200), but for some reason the ports weren’t open. Turns out this was because of the initial TW modem setup by their tech. Basically I just need this to be a “dumb” modem and not a modem/router. So following these steps I was able to accomplish that. Unplug coaxial […]

Seems like a simple question right? Aren’t we all in charge of social? Out there building our personal brand and help establish brand credibility for the company we work for? But, who’s that person in the background that implements a social strategy for your company, manages all the company social accounts, engages with customers in not only happy conversations but the bad ones as well? Who is the person that is monitoring trends and exploring new tools? What about implementing social campaigns and analyzing the social metrics to provide the benefits of […]
In the first post of this series, we discussed the importance of better understanding your customer and using buyer personas as a tool in that pursuit. Once you have that insight into who your customers are, it’s time to consider where they are in their purchasing decision-making process. Social media expert Chris Brogan published a fantastic and simple to use resource on this recently. Fishing Where the Fish Are is a short report to help marketers map social media to the buying cycle. Before making any purchase, customers are on a journey through their discovery of […]
That is one of the most asked questions I hear from people starting their social journey. There are dozens of social platforms to engage and connect with other people, but how do you use them? Below is the way “I” see these platforms being used. photo: greyweed Blogs Blogs in my opinion are generally used to inform. Take it from the tech space, blogs are used to inform on the latest product enhancements, events, etc. There isn’t a ton of engagement with readers, because it is usually on a very specific topic. […]

I recently read the The Mindset Divide study from LinkedIN and called asking myself that question. According to the study these are the top 5 drivers for personal and professional networks: “The biggest difference between personal and professional networking is purpose and mindset,” says the report. “We learned that people exhibit two very different mindsets when they engage on social platforms – a personal one to passively ‘spend time’, and a professional one to actively ‘invest time’.” LinkedIn learned that people using social networks pass time in a casual mindset, […]

Before we start deploying VMs from the template we created, I want to go through setting up a private network as I do not want these VMs to have access to my home network. Basically you have three options for creating your network. I know you have more than that, but we aren’t going to go into the advanced networking configurations in this post. NAT In this configuration the host will act as a router that hides the virtual machine behind it. The VM will have access to the network […]

Content truly is the heart and soul of any social media marketing campaign. Visual, written or interactive content captures a person’s attention, fulfills a need and/or offers a solution. When a social fan takes action, whether by Liking, commenting on, sharing, retweeting or otherwise engaging, they are giving their social endorsement of the content and, by extension, the brand. Engagement is incredibly important, as it means the brand has hit their mark with that particular piece of content. Engagement is not the end goal; ideally, your content serves to help […]
